Answer: When it is the first day of Fall Semester 2009 at Michigan State University!

Before you get too confused, let me explain that as the University reviews the Academic Calendar and shortens Fall Orientation (formally Welcome Week) a transition calendar needed to be approved  so that necessary planning for the FS09-SS10 Academic Year.

The result is that classes will begin on Wednesday, September 2, 2009, but students and faculty will follow their Monday class schedule on this first day of class.  Thursday and Friday of that week will have students and faculty following their Thursday and Friday schedules, respectively. This maintains an equal amount of contact hours for classes that meet only one day a week during Fall Semester 2009.

Here are the important dates:

  • 9/2/09 First day of classes (students and faculty follow their Monday class schedule)
  • 9/3/09 Students and Faculty follow their Thursday class schedule
  • 9/4/09 Students and faculty follow their Friday class schedules
  • 9/7/09 University closed – Labor Day Holiday
  • 9/8/09-9/11/09 Students and Faculty follow their regular Tuesday-Friday class schedules.
  • 9/9/09 Open on-line add period ends at 8:00pm
  • 9/28/09 End of tuition refund period for dropped classes.
  • 10/21/09 Last day for withdrawal or dropping a course with no grade reported – Middle of the Semester

So remember to follow your Monday class schedule on Wednesday, September 2, 2009.

Have a great summer!
